- Dr. Desai has employed biotechnological applications for overall improvement of agriculture. He developed protocol for direct somatic embryogenesis for different Sugarcane varieties that was accepted as an Indian patent. (1178/MUM/2005). The plants obtained using this technique have shown high sugar and are currently under large field trials. He has developed new methodology to control the Bacterial blight (Telya) disease in Pomegranate and developed nanotechnology based micronutrient foliar bio-fertilizer named “Pomocare”. Technology for the same has been transferred for commercialization.
- His genomic metabolomic and proteomic studies in Pennesitum, aiming to understand the molecular mechanism of apomixes, have shown the unique tissue specific expression of metabolites, proteins and genes in stigma, ovary, pollens and leaf tissues. He has demonstrated the use of induced hairy roots in biodegradation of textile dyes for combating water pollution.
- He has published 64 papers in leading Biotechnology journals in the country and abroad, and has submitted more than 300 gene sequences to NCBI.
