PPM – Moisture Measurement
PPM
One (1) Part Per Million (PPM) = one part of a substance per 1,000,000 parts of liquid. This is equivalent to one drop of water diluted into 50 liters of water.
Formula to find PPM’s in a fertilizer solution
PPM = (fertilizer weight (gm) x % plant food x 10) / rate of dilution
Media Moisture Measurement
We can measure the moisture content of media used for growing plants by dividing the moisture content into 5 levels.
Level 1
Dry : Squeeze the media by hand, open the hand and the squeezed media will break into pieces. The media will have a very light color.
Level 2
Medium : Squeeze the media by hand, open the hand and the squeezed media will maintain its form. The media will have a light color.
Level 3
Moist : Squeeze the media by hand and small drops of water will drip out from between the fingers. Open the hand and the squeezed media will maintain its form. The media will look darker.
Moist : Wet : Squeeze the media by hand and water will flow out between fingers. Open the hand and the squeezed media will maintain its form. The media has deep and dark color.
Level 4
Wet : Squeeze the media by hand then water will gush out from between the fingers. Open the hand and the squeezed media will maintain its form. Media has the deepest darkest color.
Level 5
Saturated : Squeeze the media by hand then water will gush out from between the fingers. Open the hand and the squeezed media will maintain its form. Media has the deepest darkest color.
